水曜日は映画の日。
いつもなら、近所のシネコンに行くのだけど、今日は日比谷で「五線譜のラブレター」を見てきた。
近所のシネコンでは去年の内に上映が終わってしまっていたのよね。
40年間で約870曲にのぼるミュージカルや映画の歌曲を作詞作曲した天才作曲家コール・ポーターと、“パリで最も美しい離婚女性”と謳われ彼の音楽の女神だった妻リンダ・リーとの運命の絆を描いたラブ・ストーリー。
晩年、コール・ポーターが旧友でコールの生涯を綴ったミュージカルの演出をしているゲイブと共に自身の生涯を振り返るというもの。
ミュージカルには、ナタリー・コール、エルヴィス・コステロら、有名なミュージシャンたちが出演してポーターのナンバーを歌う。
##コール・ポーター1891年6月9日、アメリカ・インディアナ州ペルーで生まれる。
裕福な家庭に育ち、6歳からピアノとバイオリンを学び、10歳で初めて作曲をする。
イェール大学を卒業後、ハーバード法科大学で法律を学ぶが、音楽の道を捨てがたく、NYの社交界の一員となる。
1916年、初めてブロードウェイ作品「シー・アメリカ・ファースト」を手がけるが失敗、1917年パリへ移住。
そこでリンダと出会い、919年12月19日に結婚、音楽の才能を開花させ栄光を手にすることとなる。
ミュージカルや映画音楽を担当し、洗練された作詞・作曲で次々とヒット作を生み出した。
音楽を担当した代表作は「Kiss Me Kate」「Anything Goes」（ミュージカル）、「上流社会」「昼も夜も」（映画）など。
約870曲にも及ぶ彼の作品は、現代のミュージシャンにも愛され、数多くのカバーやCM、TVで使用されている。
妻リンダが死去した後は、64年に生涯を終えるまで作曲をすることはなかった。
老人が静かにピアノに向かう。
そこに、友人ゲイブがやって来て、昔語りを始める。。。
以下ネタバレあり。
と、舞台が劇場になる。。。ゲイブは。コールの生涯を綴ったミュージカルの演出をしていた。
1920年代。
コール・ポーター（ケビン・クライン）は、パリの社交界の集まりで、“パリで最も美しい離婚女性”と言われたリンダ・リー（アシュレイ・ジャッド）と運命的な出会をする。
交際を始めてまもなく、ポーターは、自分の同性愛をリンダに告白するが、彼の音楽の才能と優しさに惹かれていたリンダは、「独立したカップルとして、ふたりで夢をかなえましょう」と言い、意に介さない。
リンダの言葉に、ポーターは彼女と結婚し、ヴェネチアで新婚生活を送る。
しかし、作曲活動のスランプを、バレエ・ダンサーとの情事で埋め合わせるポーター。
そんなとき、リンダはポーターをアメリカの人気作曲家のアーヴィング・バーリン（キース・アレン）に紹介。
アーヴィングは、ブロードウェイ・ミュージカルの仕事をポーターに紹介する。
「自信がない」とためらうポーターを、「絶好のチャンス」と励ますリンダ。
ミュージカルを大成功させたポーターは、一躍売れっ子音楽家の仲間入りを果たす。
リンダは、ミュージカルの初演には、記念として必ずシガレットケースをプレゼントする。
ある時、リンダが初演公演に遅れてしまう。
流産してしまったのだった。
リンダの気分転換の為もあって2人はハリウッドに移り、コールは映画音楽でも大成功を収める。
が、慢心したコールのスキャンダルで恐喝された2人は、ハリウッドとパリと別れて暮らすようになる。
コールの落馬による脚の大怪我でコールの元に戻るリンダだったが、今度はリンダが肺気腫になっている事が判る。
生涯最大の大作である「キス･ミー、ケイト」の初演、観客の大喝采の中、リンダの姿は無かった。
ミュージカル仕立ての映画だけど、突然歌が始まるようなミュージカルとは違って、歌は必然といえるような映画。
というのも、主人公であるコールが作曲家であり作詞家で、彼の足跡、すなわち彼が書いたミュージカルを再現するような映画だからね。
ミュージカルが好きでない人も、結構楽しめる映画なんじゃないかなと思う。
リンダとの出会いの場面はあまり乗る事が出来なかったのだけど、その後の2人のデートシーンでは、どうしてこんなに歌が次々とできるのかと思った。
事実は即興ではないにしても、本当にリンダと居ることで、リンダと話すことでその心情が、その会話が歌になるのじゃないかと思ったぐらい。
この時点では“甘いラブストーリー”と言う意味で、“五線譜のラブレター”と言う邦題も有りだと思った。
付き合い始めて直ぐにコールがリンダに自分の男色を告白するのだけど、この時点ではリンダともベッドを共にしているので多分ゲイと言うのではなく、バイセクシャルなんだと思う。
その時リンダがコールに言った、「ふたりで夢をかなえましょう」と言うセリフ。。。字幕では“夢”と約されていたが、“promise”と言っていのが印象的だった。
その後、コールをブロードウェイに連れて行くリンダ。
このときも2人の“夢”は“promise”だった。
成功は“約束”されていたのか。。。
そういう意味では、リンダって、コールのプロデューサーだったのだと思う。
コールが落馬で怪我をし、医者に脚を切断しなければならないと言われたシーンでも、彼の脚を切断することは、彼の尊厳をなくし、音楽を奪うものと強行に反対するリンダ。
実は、冒頭のシーンのコールが車椅子だったから、私は、いずれにしても車椅子ではピアノは弾けないだろうと思っていた。
だって、不自由な足ではペダルが踏めないもの。
果たして、退院したコールはペダルが踏めなかった。。。
その後20数回の手術の後、ペダルは踏めるようになるのだった。
その間の2人の苦労は書かれていないけど、相当だったんだろうと思う。
脚が不自由になってからのコールはリンダの愛に応える為のリハビリだったのかも知れない。
回想の中では、リンダが流産した時、コールは「音楽が単なる記号になった」と言っていた。
それでもコールは音楽を書き続けていた。
それなのに、リンダが死んだ後、コールは脚を切断し、「夢は終わった」と同時に音楽も捨ててしまう。
この時の“夢”は“dream”。
リンダの死と共に、2人の“夢”が、promisからdreamに変わってしまっていた。。。
この違いはなんだったんだろう？
もう少し、英語が理解できれば、言わんとする事が解ったのかもしれないね。
ケビン・クラインは、「night and day」で、役者に指導する眼つき、本当にゲイに見えた(笑)
アシュレイ・ジャッドは、本来の意味での“大根”役者なのね。
リンダは、ツイステッドのジェシカと同様凛々しく美しい女性で有りながら、全く違う女性像を見事に演じている。
それにしても、この人の美しさは、やはり“凛々しい”というようなタイプの女性が似合う気がする。
そして、あの特殊メイク。。。
徐々に年齢を重ねる様子が首の辺りに出ていて、思わず唸ってしまったわ(笑)
そして圧巻はやはり音楽よね。
サントラ買えばよかった。。。
